Big Cow on Canvas
Im getting close to finishing this big lady, (100 x 120cm ) My easel at the studio in Ferrers is not my big hefty easel, and I really noticed the difference yesterday. I had to hammer three wooden canvas wedges into the workings of the easel to stop it sliding down to the floor under the weight of this canvas.

Blondie - New Highland Cow Painting
Im exploring lighting effects in my paintings, and have four pieces currently taking turns now that I have completed my commissions for the time being.
The recent bespoke painting of Molly the Black Labrador reminded me of how much I used to like painting the light effects on the fur, wool and feathers of my subjects and has led me to return to this approach for a while and see where it leads me.

I enjoy creating paintings of Barn Owls so much, I decided to make a couple more, they are such beautiful birds, and quite haunting too!
I am creating this piece on a textured ground, as I love painting over a ‘bumpy’ surface, the textured effect of the finished painting. This piece will have the effect of the owl emerging from the dark, the second piece is similar, with the addition of a starry sky.
Beginning a big stag painting
This is a video I took in the studio for an Instagram reel ( follow me here ) i began this piece with an acrylic underpainting as I wanted a dark background and this helps me add depth. This is the first layer of oils going on, once dry Ill spend a few more hours on the next layer.

A small new Owl painting in progress, just a few adjustments to go. This piece is acrylics and 45 X 60 cm. I want to soften the top right foliage area and around the eyes without disturbing the colour scheme which I'm liking a lot.

A Highand Cow painting in progress video
This is a painting session condensed into two minutes. I am hoping to get better at making videos so this was my first attempt, with the use of a new camera. This piece is 80 x 100cm and will be available for sale on my website when finished.

A finished work in progress
I started sketching out this new Highland Cow piece two months ago, and I nearly finished it this week. Here are the stages, clockwise from the top left. This cow is irresistible to paint with that cheeky side-eye!
Beginning work on a new painting commission - Highland Cow in bright rainbow colours
Each Highland Cow portrait is a one-of-a-kind, unique oil painting. This little video shows the beginning stage of a new painting, which has been commissioned recently. Im going to film the whole process on this one and give the client the video along with the piece.
Re-working an older piece
This week I have been gathering my available paintings together and having a look at them with fresh eyes as I prepare for two exhibitions coming up in the Spring. With oil painting there is always the opportunity to return to an unvarnished piece and make some ‘tweaks’ at a later date. This week I decided to take 4 of my pieces to one side and give them a little facelift, adding a touch more vibrancy and contrast. This is possible by gently cleaning the surface and ‘oiling out’ the painting to provide a uniformly glossy surface to work smoothly onto. I then apply glazes of fresh colour, which can be removed , or partially removed to give the desired effect if necessary. I find this process super enjoyable and quite exciting.

Work in progress - Coonhound Mix Coda
This small oil is painted from a photo reference kindly supplied by permission of Karen Broemmelsick. I love this dog's expressive eyes. This is the third time I have painted a portrait of Coda. I have a little work to do on the feet, which I will leave slightly deconstructed so as the keep the main focus on her eyes.
Dalmatian Dog Portrait, Work in Progress
This piece is very nearly finished now. I have glazed the background in a few thin layers of Transparent Maroon (Winsor and Newton) and softened the edges on the shadow side of the dog. I like the warm effect. I have also altered the shape of his face slightly as I didnt have it quite wide enough after the first sketch and washes. I have to do a little work on his Right (our left) eye, and then he will be complete and ready to go on the wall.

Below is the reference photo that I took to work from for the Dalmatian painting. I cropped and adjusted the image in Photoshop first till I was happy with the composition.
