I enjoy creating paintings of Barn Owls so much, I decided to make a couple more, they are such beautiful birds, and quite haunting too!
I am creating this piece on a textured ground, as I love painting over a ‘bumpy’ surface, the textured effect of the finished painting. This piece will have the effect of the owl emerging from the dark, the second piece is similar, with the addition of a starry sky.
Beginning a big stag painting
This is a video I took in the studio for an Instagram reel ( follow me here ) i began this piece with an acrylic underpainting as I wanted a dark background and this helps me add depth. This is the first layer of oils going on, once dry Ill spend a few more hours on the next layer.
Painting session - Woodland Stag
This week I have changed the way that I work slightly to accommodate a couple of restrictions, and it has turned out to be in my favour. I spent yesterday painting this gentleman. I have used the same reference photo in a previous painting several years ago, and it was interesting for me, to return and see the differences in my own approach.

Work process video - painting a horse portrait.
I had already painted the first layer of this painting of a beautiful Chestnut Peruvian Paso gelding called Tucker, kind permission of K Broemmelsick. I hung the canvas up to dry and it was actually almost a year until I managed to get a second session in. I filmed myself painting the next stage and made a video. When editing it, I found out that I use my fingers rather more than I realise!
